Payton & David: A Small Backyard Wedding
Payton and David’s small backyard wedding wasn’t quite what they had originally planned. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, their big church wedding turned into a much more intimate ceremony overnight. Literally.
Originally, they had planned to get married on April 4th. But on Sunday, March 22nd I got a call from David. Ohio’s governor had just announced that their shelter-in-place would begin at midnight Monday night. So they decided to get married on Monday! He told me that they understood this was last minute. So if I couldn’t make it that would be alright, but they really hoped that I could. I jumped into action!
Their wedding was the first one of my spring season. So naturally I didn’t have my gear perfectly primed and ready to go at the drop of a hat. I quickly popped all my batteries onto their chargers, and started looking at Airbnbs. I found one juuuuust across the Indiana border just in case the state of Ohio wouldn’t let me cross. Then I packed an overnight bag, gathered my equipment, and loaded up the car.
As the sun started to rise I drove down to Cincinnati. About a four hour drive from South Bend. Winding through the hills I finally made it to their new location. Their Matron of Honor, Monica, and her husband graciously opened their home to host the small backyard wedding. Outside, I could see the bridal party setting up chairs, hanging lights, and decorating the yard.

Hearing from Payton and David about just how much work went into creating their wedding amazes me. The groomsmen bought mismatched suits from Target the night before. Payton and her bridesmaids raided the local grocery stores for all the flowers they could find. What truly amazes me the most is that the best man got up at 4:30 AM to pick up Payton’s mom who lives 2.5 hours away!
Through all the chaos that surrounded their wedding day, there was peace. The whole day was filled with joy and laughter. Seeing their closest friends and family surround these two, to create something so magical, is something I’ll never forget. Because of the work their friends put in, David and Payton were still able to do everything that was important to them on their wedding day. They still had their first look, romantic photos of the two of them, and their first dance. It was incredible.
